Literary references:
Samuel Taylor Coleridge (1772 - 1834) - Kubla Khan
The idea of the house in the woods for Catherine and the episode
title refer to the first part of the poem, that Vincent reads to the tunnel
children:
In Xanadu did Kubla Khan
A stately pleasure-dome decree:
Where Alph, the sacred river, ran
Through caverns measureless to man
Down to a sunless sea.
So twice five miles of fertile ground
With walls and towers were girdled round:
And there were gardens bright with sinuous rills,
Where blossomed many an incense-bearing tree;
And here were forests ancient as the hills,
Enfolding sunny spots of greenery.
Christina Rossetti (1830 - 1894) - Remember
Talking with Catherine about the past, Stephen quotes the last
part of the poem:
Better by far you should forget and smile
Than that you should remember and be sad.
